Emulation of Audrey by azuzephre Emulation of Audrey by azuzephre
In painting, I was assigned to emulate the style of my favorite artist in a piece.

I chose Audrey Kawasaki, and just tried to have fun with it. If you're not familiar with her work, it's well worth looking into. She's one of the most notable contemporary illustrators I can think of.

Acrylic glazes, graphite and ink on red oak.

May I ask where you found the wood? I've been trying to find a nice flat slab for essentially the same project, but I don't know where to find one. :s

Home Depot. <333 If you're lucky, you can find a really good piece in the scrap bin for less than a dollar. That's where I get all of the wood for my projects.

I did this painting on red oak, but I think poplar is the best to work on because at least what I've worked on tends to be a lot denser and smoother. Also, most poplar is pale and greenish in color, but sometimes you'll find a red or purple piece. I think it's more interesting than regular wood color. : )

Wow, thank you so much for all your help! I found two really nice slabs of poplar - one a pretty greenish shade! - , and I'm working on sanding them off now. ^^

Finding really good pieces is my favorite thing. I have like 20 pieces waiting to be painted on. Whenever I'm bored, I check to see whats in the scrap bin, more often than not, there will be a good piece, and I'll get it. Hahaha.

Good luck with your project! If you're planning on playing with transparency, varnishing the finished work will really make the wood grain come alive.

This is extremely beautiful! It's amazing how you pulled off Audrey's style with a mix of your own, I admire that very much so.

I love Audrey so extremely much, her art is so influential and just outstanding! I would love to buy something from her but alas I am in Canada and it's way to expensive for the likes of me.
